The California Agricultural Irrigation Association is working to help its members better address the drought situation in California. The CAIA is supporting improved water infrastructure in the Western states and promoting the organization’s efforts with board members Paul McFadden and Jim Lauria appearing on an upcoming Jain Irrigation webinar. In addition, planning for the September conference in Pismo Beach, California, is centered around how Western irrigators can best respond to the current water conditions.

The Family Farm Alliance, along with the Association of California Water Agencies, California Farm Bureau, National Water Resources Association and Western Growers Association, is leading a West-wide effort to send a message to Congress and the administration that Western water infrastructure is critical to the nation’s future. In January, over 200 organizations signed a letter that was distributed in Washington and to national media outlets outlining the region’s needs. Since that time, these groups have been working to outreach to committee staff, congressional leaders and the administration to advance the letter’s message.
President Biden recently met with the congressional leadership of both parties on the scope of a possible “hard infrastructure” bill. While the precise nature of the price tag or the legislative vehicle that will carry infrastructure forward is not known, the coalition is ramping up efforts to engage in this “once in a generation” effort to secure major funding for Western water infrastructure needs.

The IA awarded 10 scholarships in 2021 to students from two- and four-year institutions around the nation. The National Ground Water Association has launched its newest effort in public policy and political advocacy. The new website, www.smartwaterpolicies.com, is a one-stop resource for lawmakers, researchers and groundwater professionals to access their policy positions, white papers and online tools to advocate on behalf of the industry. The website will highlight NGWA’s current work promoting the nation’s water wells as an important aspect of the country’s water infrastructure, including current lobbying in Congress with partner associations.
