Each July, the Irrigation Association leads the industry in celebrating Smart Irrigation Month — a monthlong initiative focused on promoting the benefits of efficient irrigation and spotlighting the innovations driving the future of water management. In 2025, the campaign continues its mission to educate, engage and inspire professionals across agricultural and landscape irrigation to use water wisely.

Why smart irrigation matters

As water resources become increasingly limited, especially in agriculture-dependent regions, efficient irrigation is no longer optional — it’s essential. The irrigation industry’s contribution to the U.S. economy exceeds $23.3 billion in economic output and supports 167,000 jobs, driving innovation in water efficiency, advancing smart irrigation technologies and helping communities meet the growing demands of sustainable landscape and agricultural management.

Through the Smart Irrigation Month campaign, the IA encourages growers, manufacturers, designers, consultants and other stakeholders to share how their work supports smarter, more efficient water use. It’s also an opportunity for the public to better understand the value of irrigation in food production, green spaces and overall environmental sustainability.

A monthlong industry spotlight

One of the most visible and fun ways the irrigation industry participates is through Wear Blue Wednesday, held on July 16 this year. Irrigation professionals across the industry are invited to wear blue on that Wednesday — in the field, in the office and on social media — to show their support for smart irrigation. Wear Blue Wednesday unites irrigation professionals in a shared message: Smart irrigation matters.

Throughout the month of July, anyone can use the IA’s full set of free, downloadable resources available on its website at irrigation.org/smartirrigation. These include social media graphics, template press releases and tips for promoting your own Smart Irrigation Month activities. Whether you’re a farmer, dealer, manufacturer, designer or educator, there’s a toolkit to help you amplify your message.

You can also help by sharing your smart irrigation story. Highlight the technology you use, the water savings you’ve achieved, or the ways you’re educating others about efficient practices. Tag the IA in your posts and use the #SmartIrrigationMonth hashtag to join the larger conversation.

The best way to stay up to date throughout July is to follow the IA on social media. From spotlighting innovative products to showcasing member success stories, the IA’s channels will be packed with content that informs, celebrates and connects the irrigation community.

Smart Irrigation Month is a chance to show what this industry does best: Find more efficient ways to use water, protect our resources, and keep agriculture and landscapes thriving. Join the movement this July and be a part of this important industry initiative.

Smart Irrigation Month is more than a public awareness campaign — it’s an industrywide call to action.
