Smart irrigation is smart agriculture

July marks the height of the growing season across much of the United States, making it the right time to spotlight the essential role of water in agriculture. It’s also Smart Irrigation Month, the Irrigation Association’s annual campaign to highlight the people, technologies and practices advancing water efficiency on the farm.

Smart irrigation is a practical, results-driven strategy grounded in data and informed by real-world challenges. And it’s already reshaping how growers manage risk, protect yields and plan for the future.

Water remains one of agriculture’s most critical and closely monitored inputs. The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture Irrigation and Water Management Survey shows a decrease in irrigated acreage and total water applied. That trend reflects both a changing environment and the progress producers have made in improving efficiency.

Across the country, farmers are seeing returns from even modest upgrades. Replacing timer-based controllers with climate-informed systems, retrofitting blocks to drip or fine-tuning application rates using soil moisture sensors are delivering both cost savings and operational resilience. These solutions are being implemented in operations of all sizes.

Smart irrigation improves more than just agronomics. It strengthens compliance, reduces energy use, protects natural resources and helps operations remain competitive in an increasingly sustainability-focused market.

Smart Irrigation Month gives us a moment to recognize this progress and the professionals behind it. It’s also a chance to highlight irrigation as essential infrastructure and emphasize the growing value of expertise in a sector where precision matters.

The IA is proud to support this effort. We provide outreach tools, engagement resources and public-facing initiatives such as Wear Blue Wednesday on July 16. But the most powerful messages come from you — stories grounded in daily decisions, real-world constraints and measurable results.

We encourage you to take part. Share what’s working. Engage in conversations. Use this effort as a platform to show how efficient water use supports the future of agriculture.

Smart irrigation helps producers grow more with less. It protects our shared resources and builds durability in an uncertain climate. Most of all, it works. The path forward reflects the work you’re doing to manage water wisely — and our shared commitment to resilience and stewardship that will shape agriculture’s future.

Smart irrigation is a reflection of the work you’re doing to manage water wisely — and our mutual commitment to long-term resilience and responsible stewardship of our resources.
