Farmer sentiment showed signs of improvement in March, even as concerns about rising input costs continue to weigh on outlooks for the 2026 growing season. According to the latest Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer, stronger crop prices and expectations of improved financial performance boosted overall confidence among producers.

“While producers are feeling more optimistic about the future, there’s still a noticeable gap between short-term challenges and long-term confidence,” said Michael Langemeier, the barometer’s principal investigator and director of Purdue’s Center for Commercial Agriculture. “Longer-term optimism is supported by stronger expectations for farmland values and the broader economy, though livestock producers remain notably more optimistic than crop producers.”

Key survey takeaways:

  • 18% of producers say their operations are better off now than last year.
  • 20% of producers expect an improved financial performance this year; 18% anticipate worse financial performance.
  • The Farm Capital Investment Index is up 3 points to 53, but only 4% plan to increase machinery purchases in the next 12 months.
  • 12% of producers say they have discussed solar lease options in the last 12 months.
