The Irrigation Innovation Consortium, Fort Collins, Colorado, will host a webinar featuring four IIC-supported research projects from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. MDT on May 4.

Each presentation dives into a different section of the irrigation industry with the hope to push for a more efficient and sustainable water and energy future.

The following are the IIC-supported research projects that will be presented during the webinar:

  • The economic impact of the irrigation industry: What is it, how has it changed over time, how does this knowledge inform future industry directions and goals?
    Presenter: George Oamek, Headwaters Corporation
  • Scalable, cost-effective soil moisture monitoring: Only a modest percentage of water managers guide their irrigation decisions and conservation efforts using soil moisture monitoring technologies. How can soil moisture monitoring become easier and less expensive and time intensive?
Presenter: Trenton Franz, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
  • Connecting field performance to watershed health: Using electrical run-time to measure, manage and predict water use. Implications and scalability for irrigators, water districts, policy makers and more.
Presenter: Dayle McDermitt, Nebraska Water Balance Alliance
  • Closing the loop on plasticulture: Figuring out how to mitigate or reduce the environmental impact of irrigation system hardware is important. What is the potential viability of a new material supply chain focused on recycling short term use thin-walled drip irrigation tape into a longer-use, thick-walled drip irrigation product?
    Presenter: Charles Hillyer, Fresno State
