New tool helps farmers reduce microbial risks in irrigation water

Farmers can now assess irrigation water risks with a free tool designed to improve food safety and meet regulatory standards.

A new risk assessment tool is helping fruit and vegetable farmers better understand and manage potential microbial contamination in irrigation water.  

Developed by experts from the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University and the Produce Safety Alliance, the Risk Prioritization Tool, an Excel-based tool, simplifies the evaluation process by allowing farmers to assess hazards using direct observations in the field. 

Traditionally, farmers have relied on E. coli tests to determine water safety, but these tests can be costly and time-consuming. “This tool walks growers through the complex web of potential risk factors,” says Phil Tocco, extension food safety educator at Michigan State University. The tool considers factors such as nearby wildlife, recent heavy rains and local geological conditions, assigning a numeric risk score to guide farmers in managing these risks. 

Piloted in several states, the tool has already shown promise in helping farmers make informed decisions, according to a University of Minnesota press release. As federal regulations from the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act continue to evolve, tools like this are becoming essential in promoting safer food production practices. 

The tool is available for free and can be downloaded online.
