What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?  

Receiving the Anthony W. “Tony” LaFetra Scholarship is incredibly meaningful because it signifies support from the Irrigation Association, my professors, and my mentors believe in my potential to make a meaningful impact in irrigation education. This scholarship allows me to fully dedicate myself to learning and research. More importantly, it connects me to a community dedicated to water stewardship, motivating me to carry forward Tony LaFetra’s legacy of innovation and sustainability as I prepare to help shape the future of the industry.  

What are your future plans in the irrigation or broader industry?  

I plan to continue my education by conducting post-graduate research in agricultural water resource management and irrigation systems. My long-term goal is to make a tangible contribution to the agriculture industry. By putting my research into practice, I aim to support farmers directly, providing them with the modern knowledge and sustainable strategies they need to optimize water use and improve efficiency.  

What sparked your interest in this field?  

My interest in this field is deeply personal, rooted in my family’s history of owning an avocado farm in Southern California. Managing a water-intensive crop in an arid region exposed me early on to the severe challenges farmers face regarding water scarcity and quality. This firsthand experience motivated me to study agricultural water resources so that I can provide future generations of growers with the tools and efficient irrigation strategies needed to withstand environmental pressures.  

What advice or encouragement would you give to others exploring this career path?  

I would highly encourage others exploring this career path to stay curious, never stop asking questions and don’t be discouraged when making mistakes. Learning doesn’t end in the classroom, it happens out in the field, growing from failures, talking to growers, and collaborating with industry peers. Keep an open mind to new technologies and diverse approaches to sustainability. Seeking out mentors and remaining adaptable will not only accelerate your professional growth but also empower you to make a meaningful impact on water conservation. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions or challenge traditional methods. By staying eager to learn and embracing new perspectives, you can position yourself to develop the innovative solutions our agricultural communities desperately need.
